Women's Soccer | 11/14/2016 3:00:00 PM

Columbia, Mo. – Today the NAIA national office announced the tournament brackets for the 2016 NAIA National Championships. The Cougar women's soccer team will host their opening round game on Saturday, November 19th against Kansas Wesleyan University at 5:00 p.m. on R. Marvin Owens Field.

Columbia College solidified a spot in the national tournament after defeating Park (Mo.) University in the AMC Championship Final on Thursday afternoon. The Cougars have been playing great soccer all season long and will carry a 10 game winning streak into the national championships.

Columbia College has been a force on both sides of the ball all season long as their offense ranks in the top five in six categories while their defense ranks in the top five in two categories. The Cougars rank at the top of the NAIA in total assists (97), assists per game (4.620), shutouts per game (0.860), shots per game (28.760), and total shutouts (18). Additionally, they rank second in the NAIA in shots on goal per game (14.240), goals per game (4.330), and total goals (91).

The Cougars are led offensively by Laurie Frew and Kelsey Mirts, the AMC Freshman of the Year, who each have 14 goals on the season. Katelyn Palmer has done a great job finding her teammates all season long and ranks 11th in the NAIA with 11 assists on the year. Lucy Kingsley has also had a breakout freshman season as she has racked up 11 goals to go along with five assists on the year.

Flavia Rosado has been the key for the Cougars success this season as she has been incredibly consistent in goal all season long. The senior keeper ranks second in the NAIA in goals against per game (0.270) and has accumulated 43 saves. She has posted nine individual shutouts and contributed to nine more shutouts while allowing just five goals throughout the year. The team has not allowed a goal since their only loss of the season to Park (Mo.) University in September and will look to add to that streak in the national tournament.

The Coyotes come into this game with a 16-2-3 record on the season. They are led by Cynthia Chavez who ranks in the top five in the NAIA in total game winning goals (8), game winning goals per game (0.380), total points (59), and total goals (26). As a team, the Coyotes rank fifth in total shutouts (14) and eight in total goals (72).
