Cougars Season Ends in Quarterfinals

Box Score Orange Beach, Ala. – This afternoon the Columbia College women's soccer team continued their magical season when they took on the University of Northwestern Ohio in the quarterfinals of the 2016 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championships in Orange Beach, Alabama. The Cougars were coming off a huge penalty shootout victory yesterday over the second seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) Blue Raiders but were unable to carry over that success into today's game as the Racers defeated them by a final score of 3-0. With the loss today, the Cougars historic season comes to end with a final record of 19-2-3 on the year.

The Cougars came out in the first half and it was evident that the fatigue from yesterday's game was going to be a big factor in the match. The Racers used this to their advantage and immediately applied pressure to Columbias back line in the opening minute. It did not take very long for Northwestern Ohio to find the back of the net in this game as they were able to beat Flavia Rosado in the first minute of the match. The goal came after Klara Cahynova made a run up the field before finding Robyn Moodaly outside the box who cut it around the Cougars defense and slotted it into the bottom corner to give the Racers a 1-0 lead.

Columbia tried to get their offense going as the half progressed but Northwestern Ohio was ready for them defensively and did not allow them go at goal like the Cougars have all season long. The Racers continued to pressure Columbia College and picked up a second goal midway through the first half. Camilla Anderson had the goal for Northwestern Ohio finishing off her NAIA leading 34th goal of the season.

The 2-0 lead stood through the halftime break but the Racers added a third goal just six minutes into the second half to extend their lead to 3-0. Camilla Anderson finished off her second goal of the game when she was able to get a foot on a cross from Robyn Moodaly and knock it past the Cougar keeper and into the back of the net.

Columbia College tried desperately to get back into the game after the third goal and nearly cut the lead to two just three minutes later. The Cougars earned a free kick deep in the Racers half of the field and Laurie Frew stepped up to take it. She had converted on several free kicks throughout the season but tonight was just not Columbia's night as the ball bounced off the crossbar and out of play. They created a couple more scoring chances late in the game but ultimately the Cougars were unable to keep their season alive.

Flavia Rosado was in goal for Columbia College tonight recording eight saves in the match. Rosado was fantastic between the pipes all year long and finished her senior season with 14 wins, including 10 shutouts, and recorded 56 saves while only allowing 10 goals in 24 appearances.

Northwestern Ohio will advance to play in the semifinals of the 2016 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championships on Friday, December 2nd when they face the winner of Northwest (Wash.) University and Reinhardt (Ga.) University who are scheduled to play later this evening.
