Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the NAIA national office announced its first regular season Women's Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll for the 2017 season. The Cougars, who ranked ninth in the preseason poll, moved up four spots to number five after starting the season with a 4-0 record. This is Columbia College's first time in the top five.
Columbia College has been on fire to start the season, outscoring their opponents 11-2 in their first four games. The Cougars are led by Kelsey Mirts who has a team high five goals including two goals against both Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University and MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) University. She currently ranks third in the NAIA in game winnings goals and has scored 20 career goals in just 27 games throughout two season.
In addition to Mirts, Columbia College senior Laurie Frew has also had a quick start to the 2017 season. She currently has four goals on the season including three penalties in her first four games. The forward out of Columbia, Missouri, had two goals against Midland (Neb.) University including a second half head ball goal late in the game to give the Cougars the 3-2 win. The all-time leading goal scorer for Columbia College currently sits at 52 career goals.
As a team, the Cougars currently rank third in the NAIA in total shutouts (3), 11th in shutouts per game (0.750), 33rd in total goals (11), and 44th in total assists (6).
Columbia College returns to the field tomorrow, September 6th when they travel to Upland, Indiana, to take on the 17th ranked Taylor (Ind.) University Trojans in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
