Box Score Columbia, Mo. - The Cougar men's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a 136-46 home victory over Saint Louis Christian College on Friday night, breaking the previous single-game scoring record of 130 points set back in 1977. Columbia, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, improves to 1-0 with their seventh straight season-opening win dating back to 2007-08.
The Cougars scored the first 11 points of the game and led by as many as 38 in the opening period. Columbia shot 63 percent from the field on their way to a 57-19 lead at the halftime break, led by
Marcus Whitt with nine points. The Cougars faced little resistance over the final period as well as they cruised to the season-opening win behind a 73 percent shooting clip over the final 20 minutes.
Columbia finished 56 of 82 (68 percent) from the field and 11 of 21 (52 percent) from behind the arc on the night. Whitt led seven Cougars in double figures with a game-high 20 points.
Zach Rockers added 18 points and a career-high eight rebounds off the bench and
Chantel Stanciel dished out seven of Columbia's 28 assists. Freshman
Travis Vogt chipped in 12 points and six assists in his college debut.
The Cougars will be idle until Wednesday, November 13
th when they travel to Central Methodist (Mo.) University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Fayette, Mo.
