Box Score Columbia, Mo. – The Cougar women's soccer team defeated Doane College 3-0 on Friday night at the new R. Marvin Owens Field. With the win, Columbia improves to 2-0 overall while the Tigers fall to 1-2 on the season.
Columbia found the board as senior
Kelli Westhues made a move by the Tiger defender to score her first goal of the season in the 20
th minute of play. Junior
Katelyn Palmer was credited the assist on the play. The Cougars would dominate the ball over the next several minutes, but was unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunities. The Tigers would finally put their first shot on goal at the 33 minute mark, but goalkeeper
Flavia Rosado would come up with the save to preserve the lead. With three minutes remaining in the first half, Doane would try to strike again, but Rosado would hold her ground again and make another impressive save. Despite the pressure from the Lions towards the end of the half, the Cougars would carry the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Sophomore
Tiffany Weaver was able to find the back of the net in the 56
th minute after striking her own rebounded shot off of Lion goalkeeper Kayla Wegman, to give the Cougars the 2-0 lead.
Jordan Poire added a third tally in the 62
nd minute as she followed up
Katelyn Palmer's loose shot off of Wegman in the goal box. Sophomore
Laurie Frew looked to score her team leading fourth goal after a perfect pass from Westhues, but Wegman would make an outstanding save and punch the ball over the top of the bar. Columbia continued to apply pressure on the Tiger defense, but couldn't add to the score.
Columbia outshot Doane 26 (12 shots on goal) to 13 (8 shots on goal) for the game. Rosado put on a very impressive display in goal as she posted eight saves to earn the shutout win for the Cougars.
The Cougars will return to action on September 2
nd when they travel to Olathe, Kan. to take on Mid-America Nazarene University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
